A role for the European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability
23 April 2013
Thon Hotel EU, 75 rue de la Loi, 1040 Brussels
The European Innovation Partnership for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability (EIP) is one of the main initiatives of the European Commission to support research and innovation in agriculture. This EIP is designed as a network facility for improving technological transfer from research to the farm and the feedback loop from the farm-level back into research programming. In practice, the EIP will strengthen the links between research funded under Horizon 2020 and more operational projects funded under the Rural Development Programmes
Representing the whole plant breeding innovation chain from fundamental research to crop production, the European Technology Platform ’Plants for the Future’ is a major stakeholder of the agricultural sector and is committed to stimulating research and innovation in plant genetic resources to the benefit of the grower and final consumer
This event will look into the different ways the EIP can help enhance the innovation potential of plant genetic resources, and highlight initiatives in the plant breeding sector that can serve as a basis for the further development of the EIP
What’s in it for you? Whether you are a plant breeder, an innovation expert or if you hold a general interest in agriculture and rural development:
· Get to know the European plant breeding sector
· Get to know the EIP for Agricultural Productivity and Sustainability
· Get to know the problems and find the solutions

Draft Programme
Introduction to the EIP
This session will introduce the concept of the EIP and its place in the overall governance of agricultural research & innovation in Europe.
Confirmed speakers: Peter Dröll (DG RTD), Martin Scheele (DG AGRI) & Pascal Bergeret (French Ministry of Agriculture)
Why Plant Genetics Innovation?
This session will address the importance of innovation in plant genetic resources and the main bottlenecks that prevent the full potential of plant genetic resources to be realised on the farm.
Confirmed speakers: Ciaran Mangan (DG RTD), Garlich von Essen (ESA) & Heribert Hirt (EPSO)
Innovation Areas in Plant Genetics
This session will showcase three projects where plant breeding companies are active across the full breeding chain from characterisation of genetic material to marketing. Get ready for a surprise!
Debate: Realising the full potential of plants
This session will open and broaden the debate on the types of solutions that can be found to increase farmer awareness of the benefits of plant genetic resources, and to increase researchers’ awareness of the specific needs of farmers
Confirmed moderator: Professor Anne Glover (Chief Scientific Adviser to President Barroso)
Confirmed Panellists: Lydia Smith (NIAB Innovation Farm) & Andrés Montero (INIA)
